July Greenhouse Report
by Jim Kennedy <jkennedy 'at' batcon.org>

Most ACSS members must have been traveling over the holidays, because we had only a small handful show up for the worksession on July 3.  However, the stalwarts that came accomplished an impressive amount of work, and stayed longer than we expected.  Jim Kennedy, Jeff Poehlmann, Jim Robertson, Doug Thieme, and Jim’s friends Enora and Jerry Fant worked all morning finishing a table left from last month, starting on two more, and dismantling the last of the old tables.  After lunch, they were joined by Carol Dawson and Geoff Hoese, while Jerry and Enora left for other obligations.  Many plants were repotted before Carol left, and more tables finished.  About 3:30 Jim R. had to leave, and the rest of the guys went up to 54th Street to pick up some rescue plants.  We got about 20 columnar cacti, including a few saguaros.  After unloading the plants back at the greenhouse, Jim K., Jeff, and Doug spent some more time cleaning out dead plants, weeding, repotting, and watering.  Doug, Jim K., and Julia Germany returned to the greenhouse Monday morning to finish another table and start moving the Euphorbias to it.  A lot of weeding and some minor repotting was also performed. The following species were in flower over the weekend:

Cacti: Astrophytum myriostygma, Cleistocactus brookeae, Copiapoa humilis, Copiapoa solaris, Copiapoa taltalensis, Copiapoa tenuissima, Epiphyllum phyllanthus, Eriosyce heinrichiana, Eriosyce kunzei, Eriosyce taltalensis, E. t. pilispina, Mammillaria formosa microthele, Melocactus ernestii, Melocactus levitestatus, Melocactus oreas, Neobuxbaumia polylopha.

Other Succulents: Aloe bowiea, Anacampseros baeseckei, ? Avonia heirei, Eulophia pettersii*, Euphorbia genoudiana, Euphorbia globosa, Euphorbia handiensis, Euphorbia horrida, Euphorbia jansenvillensis, Euphorbia knuthii, Euphorbia millii, Euphorbia mitriformis, Euphorbia obesa, Euphorbia persistens, Euphorbia platycada, Euphorbia symmetrica, Haworthia floribunda, Haworthia limifolia, Haworthia scabra v. morrisiae, Pachypodium lameri, Sarcocaulon crassicaule, Sarcocaulon patersonii, Stapelia gigantea, Tricocaulon cactiforme.

August’s work session is being moved to the SECOND Saturday, from 8:30 until the heat drives us out.  Neither Jim K. nor Jeff can make it on the first Saturday, and much remains to be done.  We should finish up all the tables, continue moving and organizing plants, repot the most critical, continue weeding, and prepare raffle plants for the ACSS Fall Show and Sale.  There will be no regular worksession in September, since the Show is that weekend, but we will certainly need help setting up, tearing down, and moving plants back and forth from the greenhouse to the Garden Center.  We’ll resume our regular first Saturday worksessions in October.
