ACSS Greenhouse Report, 2 October 2004
by Jim Kennedy
This month we planned to finally repair the greenhouse itself, replacing some of the 2x4 studs that have rotted over the years. Unfortunately, Chief Engineer Jeff Poehlmann was unable to attend, so this got postponed once again. Hopefully Jeff can be there in November and we can have more people help so we can get it done before the winter (hint, hint). Those in attendance for October were Jim Kennedy, Craig Nazor, Gary Niven, Jim Robertson, and Doug Thieme.
Most of what we got done during this work session was emergency potting. We had to dig up many plants that had grown through their pots into the pea gravel and soil on which they were sitting. Most of them were repotted into larger clay or plastic pots, but some still need to be taken care of. The greenhouse could use more very large clay pots (over 14" diameter at the top) if any members have any to donate. Please bring them to the next meeting and give them to Doug to take to the greenhouse. We also potted up a bunch of the cuttings and unpotted plants on the work table, moved more heavy plants to the back low tables, pruned a few tall columnars that were getting very top heavy, and condensed the raffle plants to make more space on the table. We also dumped all the dead plants, screened the soil, and screened the gravel to re-use. Jim and Gary cleaned the two shelving units with all the pots, sorted all the pots, and restacked everything. They are much better organized and there is more space on the shelves now. Finally, a lot of general weeding, sweeping, trash throwing, and general tidying was accomplished.
